After winning first place at the Metropolitan Regional Concrete Canoe Competition in late August, NYU-Poly&#8217;s Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) took to the waters of Montreal on June 19 - 21 to compete in the National contest.The team came in 11th place overall, 7th in final product design, and won the Spirit of Competition award for focusing on sustainability and using recycled glass in their concrete mix.  <a href="http://blogs.poly.edu/ebriefs/2008/07/14/students-return-from-national-concrete-canoe-competition/#more-158" class="more-link">(more&#8230;)</a></p>

<p>Randy Sofia, Systems Engineer on the WebTeam, will wed Crystal Cook, a second grade teacher from Rochester, in September. And in a roundabout way, Polytechnic played the role of cupid in their story.</p>
<p>Last October, Randy attended the Higher Education Web Development conference in Rochester. His well-known lead foot got the best of him on the drive up and he received a speeding ticket. It was on his return trip to Rochester to traffic court when he met Crystal through mutual friends.</p>
<p>Randy and Crystal will wed September 12th in Rochester where they&#8217;ll set off (by plane) to their honeymoon in Aruba. For more about Randy and Crystal, you can <a href="http://www.randyandcrystal.com" target="_blank">visit their wedding web site</a>.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Under a hot sun in 64 degree water, Allan Goldstein, Instructor of English/ESL, placed in the top six in his age group at the United States Master Swimming&#8217;s One-Mile Open Water National Championship on June 21. 300 competitors from across the country swam in the race, including Allan&#8217;s wife who came in first in her <a href="http://blogs.poly.edu/ebriefs/2008/07/14/another-swimming-success-for-allan-goldstein/"> [read more]</a>]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Under a hot sun in 64 degree water, Allan Goldstein, Instructor of English/ESL, placed in the top six in his age group at the United States Master Swimming&#8217;s One-Mile Open Water National Championship on June 21. 300 competitors from across the country swam in the race, including Allan&#8217;s wife who came in first in her age group!</p>
<p>Allan is an avid swimmer who trains with the NYC Hydras based at Baruch College. He achieved personal records for the 800M freestyle (12 min 10 secs) and 400M freestyle (5 min 57 secs) events in December at the New England Masters Short Course Meters Swim Championship. Alan encourages others to <a href="http://www.nychydras.org/" target="_blank">l</a><a href="http://www.nychydras.org/" target="_blank">earn more about the Hydras</a> and join the team.</p>

<p>Dr. Martin L. Perl graduated summa cum laude from Polytechnic with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in chemical engineering in 1948. He has spent his career as a professor at the University of Michigan and the Stanford University Linear Accelerator Center. He received the Nobel Prize in 1995 for his discovery of the tau lepton. Dr. Perl currently serves on the Board of Advisors of the Scientists and Engineers of America, an organization committed to promoting sound science in American government.</p>
