Math Tutor Qualifying Exam

December 11th, 2008 by tutoring

The Polytechnic Tutoring Center (PTC) has openings for several good math tutors! These are part-time, paid, on-campus positions.

We will offer a qualifying exam for graduate student applicants. Those who do well on the exam will be invited for interviews.

If you are interested in becoming a PTC math tutor, please email the Director of the PTC, Naomi Nemtzow at nnemtzow@poly.edu. After January 20th, 2009, please come to JAB373 to sign up.

Our next exam date will be in January 21st, 2009.

All PTC math tutors must be able to help students with Pre-Calculus, Calculus I and Calculus II.

In addition, we are looking for tutors who can help with:

-          Linear algebra

-          Differential equations

To be a PTC math tutor, it’s important to be familiar with the material as it is taught at NYU-Poly! (If you are an international graduate student, this will be different from the way you learned the subject.)

Knowing the subject is important, but even more important is your skill in explaining the subject to a student who is learning it for the first time!

If you would like to take this exam, we strongly recommend that you prepare as follows:

  1. Read the PTC website, http://www.poly.edu/tutoring/
  2. Look at the textbooks that are used in the Poly math courses. They are available for you to read at the PTC (JAB373) and at Dibner library.
  3. Read the Math Department website, http://math.poly.edu/courses/
  4. Read the syllabi for the relevant courses.
  5. Find the sample exams and that are posted online.
  6. Practice solving problems, showing all work at every step!
  7. Practice saying why each step is necessary.
  8. Think about why this problem might be difficult for a student who has never solved it before, and how you might help that student.
  9. Practice step #7 above with a friend, taking turns to be tutor and student, and/or practice with a voice recorder.

Questions? Come to JAB373, phone x3425, or e-mail tutoring@poly.edu
